UV-DLP / UV-LCD Resin Type D Standard optimal for KFO – applications, like model production for aligners

In this short article we describe the settings and successful implementation of 3D-printed models with our DruckWege Type D Standard grey UV resin on the Phrozen Sonic XL 4K UV LCD 3D printer. The pictures were kindly provided to us by an orthodontist, so that we can demonstrate the excellent usability of the resin on the device and the direct functional use of the models.

We are referring here only to the parameters and settings for controlling the 3D printer, but not to the further use of the models. With the use case we want to help other users to find the right settings of the software and model orientation for the transfer to the Phrozen Sonic with DruckWege resins.

Chitubox: Setting up the Phrozen Sonic XL 4K

Unfortunately the current version of Chitubox does not show the Phrozen Sonic XL 4K (OKT 2020), only Sonic and Sonic Mini. But to be able to export ZIP-files, which can be read by the Phrozen software for control via a browser, the Sonic XL 4K must be entered manually. Here’s what we did: we selected the Phrozen Shuffle XL in the menu and manually changed the resolution (4K) for the Sonic XL 4K. You can do this by using the following settings. After slicing, the transfer as a ZIP file is then possible. The corresponding profile for the print path type D resin must also be accepted, see below.

Chitubox: Model orientation

The software Chitubox was used for the model arrangement of the scanned (digital) denture models. Between 8 and 12 models were arranged on the buildplate / metal plate and oriented slightly inclined (approx. 5 – 20°). Support structures with the setting Heavy and Contact areas / Contact Diameter of 1.00 mm were selected. Manually, the support structures were arranged in such a way that no supports adhered to the tooth areas later.

Exposure times on Phrozen Sonic XL 4K

For the resolution in the Z-axis, the browser-based control of the Phrozen’s proprietary software for slicing the models was used and 0.05 mm (50 microns) was used. The following parameters produced successful prints:

  • Burn-In: 45 seconds
  • Burn-In Layer: 6 pieces
  • Base Height (mm) / Up-Speed: 8 / 200
  • Normal layer: 3 seconds
  • Normal Layer Height (mm) / Up-Speed: 7 / 100
